Actives – Ceramides & Sphingolipids

Key Market Drivers

What do consumers want from their skincare products?

    • Science-based solutions that can support the prevention and appearance of negatively perceived skin conditions.
    • Long-term results, an investment mindset means beauty brands can offer premium products that deliver longer term value.
    • Multifunctional. Less is more – merged products – e.g. sun care and colour cosmetics

What are Ceramides?

Ceramides are lipids (oils) that help form the skin’s barrier and help the skin retain moisture. Their “critical” status means that ceramides, or a lack of them, play an important role in how your skin looks and feels, as well as how it can defend itself against external aggresors such as irritants, pollution and UV rays.

Ceramide levels in our skin decrease as we age. By the time you are in your 30’s, you have lost around 40% of your skin’s ceramides, and by your 40’s, you have lost approximately 60% of your skin’s natural ceramides (The Cut).

      • Significantly increases skin hydration
      • Particularly suitable for sensitive skin types
      • Slows down the process of skin-ageing
      • Known to boost the efficacy of other skincare ingredients within a formulation

During Covid-19, the drying effects of many hand soaps and sanitisers and the potential for disruptions to the skin barrier suggest the need for products with ingredients such as ceramides and lipids to help with healing and repair (Mintel). “Even just rinsing our hands under water as often as is happening now is damaging to the epidermis of our skin. All of these cleaning and disinfecting agents are damaging to the skin when used too often and cause dry skin, itching, and dermatitis.” Debra Jaliman – Dermatologist.
